Norwalk, the “oyster town”
The sixth-most populous city in the state of Connecticut, Norwalk, has a population of about 91,000 people according to the 2020 Census. The town is in Fairfield County, located in the southwestern portion of the state, and also known as Connecticut’s gold coast.
Norwalk was settled in 1649 and incorporated in 1651. Norwalk was nicknamed “oyster town” because of its abundant oyster fisheries and proximity to the ocean. Norwalk is also just a few miles from New York City, where most of the oysters are distributed.
